Roots

Count me among the millions of those who watched the agony of Kunte Kinte a half-century ago and were deeply, deeply moved.  Roots, a story--a novel, really--by Alex Haley, affected me so powerfully that it sent me scurrying to uncover my own. Sometimes people wonder why I care about my own Dutch Reformed background. Alex Haley made me wonder who I was when I really didn't know, and ethnicity--even the lack it--is one ingredient in the identity cocktail. 

[I spent too many years reading term papers not to say anything about Haley's shameful plagiarism in that book; but that's a story for another time.] 

Kunte Kinte's story was very bitter but incredibly wholesome. White folks don't fare well in Alex Haley's portrayal of the lives of his ancestors. Roots was a main stage production that wouldn't let America look past the rising action of its own story. Me either. And even though I'd spent a number of years outside the church back then, it still hurt me to see that sometimes--oftentimes--the madmen spouting scripture did the most savage bloodletting.

That phenomenon is front-and-center in 12 Years a Slave, too, a great film that likewise creates downright beasts out of bible-toting Christians from south of the Mason-Dixon, men as deft with a whip as they are quick with proof texts. When it comes to slavery, the sullied past of evangelical America is haunting.

And it's there again in Sue Monk Kidd's bestseller, Oprah-blessed, The Invention of Wings, a powerfully plot-driven novel of two women, one of whom Ms. Kidd pulls from the pages of real American abolitionist history, Sarah Grimke. Sarah and her sister Angelina turned their back on their family, went north from their home in Charleston, and became marquee lecturers on the abolitionist circuit by forswearing their own slave-holding past. 

Fascinatingly, Ms. Kidd's novel creates something of a twin character, a slave girl named Hetty or "Handful," who is all of that. Hetty's mother teaches her that the only way to live with slavery is to keep a live portion of yourself in all-out revolt, a spitfire revolt that doesn't kill you--because it can--but maintains the fire of her own authentic human spirit.

The villians of The Invention of Wings are evangelical Christians like the Grimke's mother, who requires her slaves attend a Sunday School she serves up using a slaves-and-masters curriculum designed to perpetuate servitude. It's awful--not the book, but once more having to realize that men and women used the Bible to justify a way of life that would not have existed if it hadn't been fueled on blood.

Just once, I'd like to read a book about good Christian slave-holders. Did they exist? I'd like to see a movie that told stories about Bible-believers who bought into both Jesus and slavery, who didn't lock people in leg irons cast from their own damned fire and brimstone. There had to be some like that, don't you think? I have to think so.



A book some might call "the greatest American novel" doesn't have any either. When Huck Finn finally decides that staying with the slave Jim as Jim makes a break for freedom, he knows, inside and out, that his decision to keep going down the river, to not turn Jim in, is not only a crime in the South he's leaving behind, but, much worse--a sin. 

And that's why little Huck utters the most famous line in all of American literature:  "All right then, I'll go to hell." 

The book my parents read from when I was a boy, the Bible specifically designated for kids, an early version of Catharine F. Vos's The Children's Story Bible, made it perfectly and memorably clear that that son of Noah named Ham got himself cursed for laughing at his soused father and then went south in the family's diaspora, to Africa, where his people would live and prosper as servants of the other brothers. Slavery was that clear, that biblical.

I put out a note to faculty years ago, just to see if anyone had that fat old blue book around somewhere, and I found one. I photocopied the passage and, as long as I taught Huck Finn I brought that passage up in class to college students who seemed nowhere near as shocked as I had been at the way I'd been reared. It was a passage I remembered hearing as a boy, a biblical interpretation just as dangerous as anything those Southern Christian bigots could spout. 

It was in me too somewhere, this despicable theology of race and faith. 

Dutch immigrants to this country, I'm told, deliberately steered away from the American south in the immigration wave that populated west Michigan, southeast Wisconsin, and south central Iowa before the Civil War. Despite their own slave-trading past, those wooden shoes wanted no part of an institution that America held onto longer than most in the Western world because it clearly empowered the American South. 

A century later in a small town in Wisconsin, when the Schaap family finished supper, my father would grab our well-worn copy The Children's Story Bible and read a story or two to us kids, our own family altar.

I never had a slave, never owned a whip; but, as a boy, I knew something about slaves because I knew the story of Noah and his sons, and where specifically one the boys, that one named Ham, had gone, where he went and what he did and why it was he served us.

That's what I was told.

Morning thanks--Relics

What I can't help but notice, almost daily, is that I'm running low on holy water. Truth is, this Protestant has never opened this elegant little bottle, never sprinkled its contents on anything, never tried out its holy potential. It stands atop my file now with a gaggle of other memorables, the blessed water within dissipating to wherever sealed holy water goes when it disappears. 

Three years ago I bought this sweet keepsake--two euros--at the shrine to St. Boniface in Dokkum, the Netherlands, a sort of open-faced house of worship that celebrates the life of a priest who may well have been Europe's most famous martyr, He already had a great vitae by the time some pagan Frisians offed him. He brought Christianity to the pagans, after all. He's the patron saint of Germany. 

Some historians pooh-pooh his tactics because his methods were extreme, well, primitive. He cared not a whit for the what we'd call today the indiginous culture of those to whom he brought the gospel.  

The most famous tale of his saintly life surrounds his felling of Thor's Oak, a huge tree--so saith posterity--whose massive size made it a shrine.  Boniface would have nothing to do with heresy, so he cut it down.  At the moment he was at it with his axe, some say, a miraculous straight-line wind came along and broke the thing divinely into four chunks. The felling of Thor's Oak was the kind of mighty deed that sped his ascension to sainthood.

But he lost his head in Friesland when a gang of the world tallest heathens martyred him for destroying their shrines.  The date was June 5, the day before Pentecost, 754 A.D.

I couldn't resist the bottle. It's beautiful, don't you think?--its water drawn right from the spring at the shrine of St. Boniface. But mysteriously now, this elegant little bottle is losing its currency. 

I can joke about it. My pseudo-sophistication allows me some comfortable distance from such spiritual tomfoolery. Besides, I had two dogs in that historic hunt. I'm a believer, after all; sometime--who knows?--some ancient barbarian ancestor may well have got himself converted by St. Boniface. On the other hand, I can't help but be a bit proud of those hearty Frisians who did away with the man who belittled them. Truth is, both sides of the story are worth telling.

Maybe that's why it's precious to me, even though it's losing its holy cargo. Sometime, post-mortem, my kids will pick it up and toss it forthwith, as glibly as their ancestors did away with a saint. But to me, with or without its holy water, it's precious because, like any other symbol, it is what it is and so very much more.

Years ago, a funeral for one of my wife's aunts was held on a frigid January afternoon, one of those clear winter days when everyone in the county wonders why anyone lives out here in the face of a prairie wind so cold it'll take off your face. It was so bitter that afternoon that even though a caravan of mourners made its way out to the cemetery for the burial, there was no committal. The cold was simply too brutal.  

We watched from the car as the pallbearers lifted that casket from the back of the hearse and placed it on the brass set up beneath the snapping folds of a tent around the open grave. But no one--mostly it was old folks anyway--got out of the cars because the pastor had made clear that it was too cold for a psalm and prayer in that wind.

But another aunt, a sister of the deceased, got out of her husband's car and walked, alone, to the gravesite, stood there alone in the cold and took a single flower from the bouquet atop the casket, then brought it with her back to the car. That reverence I'll never forget.

That memory explains the single blade of blue stem beneath the bottle in the picture above. I remembered the way that near-ninety-year-old aunt insisted on a flower from her sister's casket, how she walked alone through the snow to that canopy, took a sprig of color, then hesitantly traced her own footsteps through the snow back into the warmth of the car. 

Just last Saturday, I grabbed the one blade of blue stem some groundskeeper missed with the weed-whacker in a small-town South Dakota cemetery.  There it was--see it? Now it's here.

It's pulled it up from the grave of a woman whose life I'm still trying to trace, and now it's here, on the shelf beside what little holy water I still have and a gallery of museum pieces nobody else would find of any value. 

You'll just have to trust me when I say that single blade of prairie grass is far more than what it is.

Where does it come from in us?--this need to remember, to preserve, to hold to something larger than we are? Maybe I'm speaking just for myself here, but I think we all somehow need to be awed. We're not really whole without something to reverence.

The truth is, I'm about out of holy water.  I'll live.  

But there are images, even little idols in my life, and they're all around me, bringing comfort and good cheer; they seem to accumulate with every passing year.  What's sits and stands right now behind this Protestant, as I sit here at the keyboard this morning, is an open-faced shrine, which proves, I think, what's there in the creed I've recited a thousand times:  really, every last one of us--we're all part of the holy catholic church, even the Calvinists.

We spent some more time working on speed drills with multiplication tables today before getting into today's lesson.  Today's topics included working on solving expressions that need a number substituted in for a variable.  The second topic that we review was working with expressions that involved order of operations.

Morning Thanks--Prayer concerns

"Anything else?" the preacher says, after listing two or three prayer concerns, each of them compelling. He points to the back pews, and a voice, a shaky female voice, says her mother fell and broke her hip, which is bad enough but then it's a real problem because she's the one taking care of her elderly husband, who's in a wheelchair.  

That deepens the hush because there aren't any young people in the church, so old people breaking their fragile bones is something that hits frightfully close to home.

The preacher writes down what he has to, raises his eyes again, looks around, and points.

"My granddaughter--" another voice comes out of the back, behind me.  I don't turn around. Sometimes it feels like I'm rubbernecking if I do a 360 in order the spot the supplicant. We're still really only visitors. Nobody gives names in this church; there are no more than forty souls in the pews on a sunny Sunday.

"My granddaughter--" the voice says again. It's a grandma, but that's no surprise because there's loads of them. But now there's been two pregnant pauses and enough of an audible gulp for all of us to know that a matter of significant heft has made the telling more of a problem than she might have thought when she raised her hand. 

"My granddaughter--" a bit more hesitation, then the kind of tremolo you just know is prompting tears, "--is going to graduate this week from law school," she says, obviously emotional, "--USD."

Tears wrung from joy. Not sadness at all, but pure and radiant joy. 

I have no idea how God almighty fields a couple billion prayers per minute, but I believe he does. Somehow.  But right then I couldn't help think that, like me, amid the tales of woe, he might have smiled when this one came in. 

Her granddaughter was graduating from law school.

It's impossible for the imagination not to try to fill in open spaces. Maybe once upon a time this granddaughter had been a real problem. Look, let's think the worst: maybe there'd been meth, maybe a horrible marriage, maybe something she did that made forgiveness more than just a chore. I don't know.

Then again, maybe not. Maybe she'd been a storybook granddaughter, Little Red Riding Hood carting a quart of mint chocolate chip ice cream and two spoons along every time she'd stop by. Maybe she was absolutely perfect.

Me? Here's what I thought. I wondered if maybe those tears were wrung from the plain fact that this one, this granddaughter, was the first grandchild, not just the first to go to college--maybe that too--but the first to go on to become someone of significant professional respect in the family.  "Did you know Laura is going to be a lawyer?" she might have said to her coffee friends three or four years ago; and now, the only lawyer in her family was to pick up her diploma, right down the road too, across the river in South Dakota.  My lands, what a day.

It's what she had to say. 

And I couldn't help wonder, really, whether it wasn't a voice from the American past, an American dream that has, for many reasons, fallen on hard times. It's the dream that brings illegal immigrants to our packing plants and milking parlors, a dream that makes millions from all around the world believe that if they could only get to America they could really get somewhere.

But, as Frank Bruni says in yesterday's New York Times, "More and more I think we've lost it, and by 'it' I mean the optimism that was always the lifeblood of this luminous experiment, the ambition that has been its foundation, the swagger that made us so envied and emulated and reviled." On a new "social progress" register that lists 139 countries, we are, he says, 39th in basic education, 34th in access to water and sanitation, just two slots ahead of Slovenia. 

Republicans claim it's all Obama's fault, but two wars and a bad recession were well under way the moment he stepped into office; and Rand Paul promises he's not going to do big things--only 300 million little things. He doesn't believe in government, after all.  Most Republicans rather liked Cliven Bundy's declarations.

Something is more pervasive here, something's in the water, something--I hate to say it--only tragedy can rebuild, if it can be rebuilt at all. Today, most people don't believe in what that grandma is experiencing, a world in which our kids and their kids have better lives. Most Americans no longer believe that their kids will have it better--life, that is--than they did.  

In church, yesterday, it came as a surprise when a grandma who couldn't quite the get the words out was choked up by love and joy and greatly forgivable pride.  

It was a request for prayer and, simultaneously, an answer to it, I'm sure. That shaky voice, I'm thinking, came from a lifetime of hope. 

I may be wrong, but it was a moment we likely don't see all that often anymore; and this morning, for many reasons, I'm thankful to have been there.

Geometry assignment; May 12

We began the day by going over the schedule for the rest of the school year as we took a look at the finals week schedule and what chapters of study remain for us to cover.  We then began our next chapter on coordinate geometry.  The topics that we took a look at today involved using the distance formula to prove various geometric facts and also working with the distance formula to generate the equation for a circle on a coordinate grid.

A gourmet Fourth

I'm not sure how all of this goes together, but I'll see if I can work it out. 

It wasn't long ago--and I don't remember where--when the whole bunch of us were subject to one of those cruel games meant to force you undress in front of people you don't know and show them something of yourself that'll make them like you in ten minutes. You know.  "Here we go, answer me this--how would you wear your favorite garden vegetable?"

Ain't we got fun.

The question was something about fast food, not complicated.  Maybe you had to imagine yourself on some deserted island with one menu item. I don't know.

I spent zero time coming up with an answer--for me, hot dogs.  I'm not kidding.

Gasp.  Gasp. Gasp. Gasp. Strange looks. Crooked eyebrows. "Seriously?" You'd think I caused offense.

Yes, seriously. Hot dogs. 

My mother was a piano teacher.  (Stay with me now.) When I was a schoolboy and walked home at lunch, there was always some kid on the piano taking a lesson. My mother was a piano teacher. I know I said that already, but it's also my way of suggesting that she wasn't a cook. I'd make my own lunch, which I did, daily, for most of my middle school years.  

A simple menu really, just boil a hot dog, roll it in a piece of Wonder Bread, and smother it in ketchup and relish. Voila. 

That's why people say miracles can happen. I still love hot dogs.

Some guy wins hot-dog-eating contests by jamming 79 into himself in ten minutes or whatever. I'm not that gone. But I do love 'em.

Okay, all of that is simply to get here. The world's best hot dogs are from Chicago. Hands down. Even O'Hare. I can't climb out of that place without a couple. I'm sure real Chicagoans have their favorite hot dog haunts, and there may well be some losers; but I'm not fussy. Give me a Chicago hot dog with that juicy kosher dill, and I'm home.  Maybe a few peppers. And mustard.  

Hands down, however, the best hot dog west of Joliet has to be those beauties from Bob's Drive-Inn, LeMars, Iowa. Go ahead and google. I'm not lying. They're bathed in what Iowans call "tavern," basically un-constituted hamburger brewed with some punchy spices. "Loosemeat" some call it here, but there's something vaguely sinful about that word so retired people like me use it sparingly.

Anyway, Bob's has been on a stoplight corner of Hwy 75 since 1949. It's old enough to retire, but it still delivers the goods. You walk up to the window and wait. No carry-out girls on skates or anything--this is old-fashioned, blue collar drive-in culture right here in Siouxland. 

Okay, so it's the Fourth today. John Phillip Sousa plays all over America, and the night sky explodes with China's very best concoctions. If I did my math right, 238 years ago some rapscallion radicals spit in the eye of King George and went their own way. The U. S. of A. was born. It would take a while for hot dogs, I'm sure.

I read somewhere that the city of Frankfurt, Germany, celebrated the 500th anniversary of the hot dog in 1987. You might think of Bob's as the glory of what evolution created after five centuries, the flowering of the art, the best of the wurst (sorry).  

Look at that place and remind yourself it's the Fourth of July, doggone it. Hum a verse or two of "Stars and Stripes Forever." 

Then step up an order a hot dog. Maybe two or three. They're only three bucks.

You're an American. You bleed red-white-and-blue. U-S-A.  U-S-A.

Seriously, if you're in the neighborhood, stop at Bob's for a hot dog.

You'll be ready for the fireworks.

Geometry assignment; April 21

We went over our quiz from last week before getting started on today's lesson.  We continued to work on finding the areas of sectors and the lengths of arcs today.  We focused on using the areas of sectors to find the radius values of circles and various other areas inside of a circle and an inscribed triangle.  The students got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

We worked on another activity (geometry in a 2 x 4) in class today that dealt with describing and locating various figures (points, lines, and planes).  The periods were shortened due to a welcome-back assembly, so the students didn't complete the entire activity in class.  The rest of the questions were assigned as homework.

Strawberries

I honestly didn't know the guy.  We share a college alma mater, but little else really. He's a tradesman, I'm a retired prof. We live in the same neck of the woods, basically, and he was over, a repair man.  Nice guy. He seemed more than a little interested in yakking. Younger than I am, but not by decades. 

It's clear he knows what he's doing.  I watched him for a while, just as I'd watched oodles of tradesmen in the last year--dirt movers, concrete layers, frame carpenters, dry-wallers, insulators, finish carpenters, painters. I watched 'em all when our house went up, and I loved it, thought about how incredibly far I'd been away from the trades for so long, from the crowd that does day labor day after day, across the country--and here.  Makes things.

One of 'em told me he charged $15 an hour labor, $30 if I hung around, $45 if picked up a screwdriver.  Yesterday, I told the guy that and he laughed, comfortably.

Like I said, nice guy. Didn't know him by family or town, by college class or any kind of reputation, only by business, his business.  He's told me that long ago he went to Dordt. Somehow--maybe simple prejudice--I simply wouldn't have guessed. 

It was late in the afternoon. He finished up after six, and I couldn't help but imagine that his wife was rolling her eyes in some tv room back at the house, wondering how long she was going to have to wait for him--again.  But he liked to talk, and he seemed to appreciate me standing there beside him going on and on.  He seemed almost oblivious to time.

That morning, we had picked more than our share of strawberries. My wife had made muffins and jam and a yogurt souffle to die for, smothered in 'em. Oh, yeah--and bread too, strawberry bread. Sounds strange, but I could eat half a loaf in one sitting--that good. Anyway, it's in the freezer because we just couldn't eat everything she was cooking up with that motherload of strawberries.

I thought I'd pack some along with him. Be nice, right?  We had way too many.  I came back into the house, asked my wife whether she could part with a few. She looked at me and rolled her eyes, then pulled out one of those little green baskets the hard ones come in when you buy 'em at the store. You know.

"Does he want to eat 'em on the way home, you think?" she said.  "If he does, I'll pluck 'em and wash 'em up."

So I went back out to ask. "We got a ton of strawberries," I told him, "too many for a couple of old farts. All day long, my wife's been putting them in everything but summer sausage."

He looked up, smiled.

"Want some?"

He looked at me as if he thought I was kidding.  

"You going to eat 'em on the way home or you going to save 'em for your wife?" I said. "Makes a difference, Barb says."

"I'll eat 'em on the way home," he told me. "Nice of you."

"Like I said, we got tons."

"I love strawberries," he said.

"You sure you're wife won't be mad?" I said, joking.

"My wife left," he told me. "About nine months ago already.  She's in California, and she's not coming back. At least, I don't think so."

I didn't say a thing. Maybe I should have. I went back in the house.

"He's going to eat 'em on the way home," I told my wife of 42 years, 43 tomorrow, in fact.  "He told me his wife left him nine months ago already. She's not coming back, he says."

Stopped her cold. She plucked the berries, ran 'em under the faucet, and rolled them into that little green basket. 

I brought them out. 

I didn't know what to say really. I mean, he wasn't my friend, not a close friend. Do you just haul off and ask him how he's doing with being left behind? If you don't even know him at all, not really, doesn't questioning seem like just walking into his house without knocking? Should I have prayed? 

I went back into the house for supper. He was finishing up.  Couldn't have been long and he and the strawberries were gone.  He texted me later, said he left the bill and thanks so much for the strawberries.

I couldn't help but think I let him down somehow.  

"She's not coming back, I guess," he told me, screwdriver in his hand. 

And I didn't say a thing.

Pioneer women

There are two women in this story, two women and 125 years. One of them, this one, Renske, immigrated to America at the end of the 19th century, came here with a husband and a child. 

The other, 96 years old, knew her once long ago. "Aunt Janet knows something about Renske," a friend of mine told me. "She says she worked for her as a teenager." He told me that Aunt Janet lives in an apartment in town, across from the church. "Aunt Janet is almost 96, still lives on her own, and is very sharp," he said in a note.

Renske Hiemstra may be long gone, but her letters back home to Friesland got under my skin when I read them, under my skin and into my heart. Her's is just another 19th century immigrant saga, a pioneer woman who for a quarter century wrote her sister faithfully once the entire rest of the family left the Netherlands, all of them dreaming of homestead promises in Dakota Territory. 

In 1930, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, an oil magnate and ex-governor erected an indomitable, 17-foot bronze figure in a sun-bonnet, holding--leading--her son through a frontier she too saw as an avenue to a better life, an imposing statue called "the Pioneer Woman."

That she and her family displaced the thousands of Native people who called the land their home doesn't mean she and the women she represents don't have a story. She does, because white settlers on the Plains--Yankees or European immigrants--almost always found creating a life out here difficult, even terrifying, especially women, especially mothers. 

Renske Hiemstra didn't fall into the lap of luxury once she and her husband started a new American life. Farming was perilous, offered far more lean years than fat; and death stalked her like a unforgiving enemy. She and her husband Albert lost three children in their first ten years. 

The first, Lieuwe, was a joy, already two. "Nearly 24 hours he was so short of breath--oh, it was unbearable to watch," she says to her sister. "Oh, to see that lamb suffer so. . that breaks my heart. . ." They'd been here for just three years.

Nine months later, the second child, another boy, lived for just two and a half days. "And now, dear brother and sister, what is to be said about such things?" her husband writes, Renske probably unable to put a pen to paper. "We sometimes ask our Lord the reason for such things, but our God does not answer." 

And four years later, a third child stillborn. "This is now the third time that the Lord has taken such a hope for the future from us," Renske writes. "How this touches a parent's heart cannot be understood by those who have not undergone such an experience." 

Still, stubbornly, she clings to faith:  "Nonetheless, the Lord governs, and what answer can we give the Lord and how shall we meet him? He gives and takes away that we may even in this praise his name."

It's her testimony, her refusal to question the Lord God almighty, that grips my heart in her folded hands.

Three children.  And then, twenty years later, in 1921, Albert dies: "we hope to see one another in the paradise of the later-life, where there are no troubles or worries.  It is better for Albert."  

Soon after, the letters home simply end. 

I wanted to know this Renske Hiemstra better, wanted to know that that stubborn, proud faith didn't wither through the painful seasons she passed alone. I wanted to know what she was like when the letters ended, when she grew old.  

And Aunt Janet remembered her.

When I pulled up to Aunt Janet's apartment, she was standing outside, waiting, in nearly 90-degree heat. I shook her small hand politely, and we went inside. She told me how she had never forgotten walking across the pasture to the Hiemstra place 83 years before. Her visitations there were, in a way, a weekly mission of mercy because her mother had told her that Renske was very weak and needed help. Janet was just a girl, thirteen years old. It was 1931, mid-Depression, just about the time that rich man in Ponca City put up that memorial statue. For doing all the housework, one day a week, Aunt Janet said she was paid a quarter.  
I told her why I was interested.  It's a story about faith, I said, and I told her that Renske Hiemstra had lost three children and a husband long, long ago, lost all of that but as far as I knew never lost her faith. 

Aunt Janet didn't know about the children. They were gone before she was even born. Besides, she was just 13 years old, and, she said, "you know what you're like when you're 13." Still, it seemed to shock her that she hadn't known.

But she didn't simply want to tell me what she knew, she wanted to show me. So the two of us left for the country on a tour of the neighborhood where, eighty years ago she'd been a girl--and a look at the Hiemstra place just across the pasture. 

There's likely nothing on the yard that might have belonged to Renske Hiemstra and the son who lived there in those years, maybe an ancient hen house; but once we got out there, Aunt Janet could barely stanch the memories. And why should she? Once she found the place back, there was no stopping her, and I loved the stories.


What Aunt Janet related made it clear that Renske's life, after her husband's death and her only daughter's departure for California, was not at all what she and her family had envisioned when, forty years before, they'd left the Netherlands.  Nothing. Everything Aunt Janet remembered of the place was raw and dismal, even despairing--no food, no refrigeration, no strength.  Aunt Janet says Renske Hiemstra never moved from her chair in the kitchen, rarely even spoke. Aunt Janet was still a child, but the depressing story in that darkly lit kitchen she remembered very well.

I wasn't surprised, but the picture she drew wasn't what I wanted to hear because I would have much preferred hearing her, once again, even yet, extolling the love of God.  Aunt Janet remembered no such testimonies.

I would have much preferred Renske Hiemstra to be the powerful pioneer woman in Ponca City.

She wasn't. The life she'd lived in the new world of the prairie wasn't the story I wanted to hear or to tell.  It ended in a darkened kitchen, with no food.

The two of us circled the place, looked at it from every angle, as Aunt Janet kept telling stories, kept remembering growing up next door, walking a mile and more to a little Christian school that folded when she was going into the eighth grade. There was no money.

When we got back to town, she asked about my family and I told her about our kids, our grandkids. And then she told me, "You know, I've lost two boys."  One to cancer, one, just 18 in an accident. 

Sometimes you start to think that there's so much you don't know. 

When we came back to her apartment across from church, when we pulled up to the front door and I got out to help her out, I couldn't help but notice tears. She seemed to be crying. Her voice as she said goodbye was not at all unsteady, but the tears just kept rolling down her cheeks. 

I don't know why. It's a mystery I would like to understand because I felt both responsible for them and helpless at the way they fell. I'd been the one to bring all of that back, after all. I was the one who wanted to hear, to know. It seemed to me that she'd loved the telling, the remembering, the places so rich in images she'd not pulled from her memory for so very long. I thought she'd loved it. I really did.

Still, when I left there were tears, more tears, Aunt Janet's unexpected tears.

There are two women in this story, two women, 125 years, and just plain all too many tears.
