Wasicu at Chankpe Opi: A White Man at Wounded Knee VI

There’s more. You must have noticed because you can’t have missed what’s right in front of us—what’s been there the whole time we’ve been watching what happened. Be careful as you walk around on that promontory because a crumbling block foundation, scattered with crumpled beer cans and trash, marks the outline of what was once a Catholic church, right there where those Hotchkiss guns rained death on the council circle. It’s crumbling, as things do that are not preserved. 

The church that once stood here was destroyed in the 1973 Wounded Knee conflict, when, once more, violence occurred not far from where we’re standing. Men and women who held radically different views of Native dignity squared off against each other in this very valley. That dispute brought in U. S. Marshalls and turned deadly, when armed wasicu, here, once again, dug in like the cavalry. For many, those government marshalls were here to defend tribal leaders some thought violent, despotic men who’d long ago sold their souls for fools’ gold.

It isn’t pretty—this crumbling shell. There’s nothing to suggest that what once stood above ground here represented—even offered—the Prince of Peace. 

In Coventry, England, you can walk within the skull-like remains of a cathedral destroyed by Nazi bombs during World War II, a remarkable memento of Brit suffering during relentless air strikes. Coventry Cathedral is what much of Europe looked like after Hitler. That foundation is immense, its walls rise and fall jaggedly. But its perimeters are festooned with plaques and flowers and all kinds of memorials neatly commemorating suffering and heroism.

No walls still stand on the foundation half-buried in the crest of the hill where we’re standing. No memorials—just graffiti—decorate what’s there. No one keeps the place up, so what’s left deteriorates in the abusive hands of changing prairie seasons. You can walk into that foundation, if you dare. The empty shell of the church that once looked over the field where hundreds died is nothing at all like the monument at Coventry.

And yet it is. It’s just not sanitized. But then, nothing is at Wounded Knee. Today, there is very little to mark the spot, beyond the sign on the road and the old monument behind us. There is a circular visitors’ center down the hill to the east, the pit toilets stand just outside. The center itself is black, and it’s likely you’ve parked beside it before you walked up the hill to the burial monument. In the summer, the place is open. You can wander into its dark confines, where various displays will tell part of the story. But most of the year you’ll find a padlock on the door, which means you’re on your own at Wounded Knee.

Morning Thanks--Anniversary

She was 22--that's enough of a start. 

There's a story here. Esther Helen Emal nee Claassen died very young, just 22 years old, and she died in 1945, which might prompt you to believe she left a husband in uniform; and that might be true if it weren't for the fact that her mortal remains are in the cemetery beside First Mennonite Church, a rural congregation in central Nebraska.

The war didn't take her, even though it took thousands of others her age in 1945. And it likely didn't take her husband either, although he was, in all likelihood, very much of age. Traditionally, Mennonites are pacifists, although calling them "traditional" pacifists makes the position they've religiously staked out sound far less difficult than it is or has been. Telling someone you're a pacifist with Hitler trying to take over the world couldn't have been a cakewalk.

I was out on a blue highway, on my way back to Beatrice, Nebraska, when there it was--First Mennonite, a tan brick fortress mid-prairie, its own well-manicured cemetery in the backyard. I have to push myself to make unplanned stops because my natural tendency--a vestige of original sin, I think--is simply to keep trucking, to get there, wherever it is I'm going. My internal capitalist reminds me I hadn't planned on a stop at First Mennonite. It wasn't on the itinerary. 

These days, that's when I remind myself I'm retired. 

I drove in. There's always life in a cemetery.

To be truthful, I didn't think much about Esther Helen Eman nee Claassen when I stood in the grass beside her grave and snapped this picture. What had stopped me cold was the icyness of what's on the cement beside her--three little somewhat scattered markers telling the world that there's a vacancy here; the space beside Esther Helen is open, you know, just in case. 

"Ask not for whom the bell tolls." That's John Donne. And Hemingway, later. "It tolls for thee."

Which is to say, me.

Memento Mori--memorials of death--abound in our world, although, quite frankly, they abounded much more richly in the age of Menno Simmons and John Donne.  Here's a couple of beauties I snapped in Holland a couple of years ago. 

One of the side doors of an old cathedral, a sticky note skeleton, to remind you not to forget that there's an end to things.  Just sayin'.

How about this bonny lass?  Naked as a baby, but that skull is, you might say, a dead giveaway.

I don't know--maybe I'm just susceptible. "Vacant," the three little slips said, as if space was on sale last Saturday. 

Look, today's our anniversary, not a time to be haunted by death, right?  

Well, maybe, maybe not. What all this marble intends is simply to say that death is real. 

So live. Get off the highway. Keep scratching items off your bucket list, and always add a couple more at the bottom.

That's not a bad rule of thumb for an anniversary--42 years today.  We'll have to see what we can do.

I don't know a thing about Esther Helen Eman nee Claassen, but I dare bet that were she sitting there at her grave site last Saturday when I stopped, she'd probably suggest the very same thing.

Geometry assignment; 9/11

We went over several angle addition homework problems before getting started on today's lesson.  Today's topic focused on several postulates and theorems in geometry.  We demonstrated these together with some fishing line, bobbers, and cardboard planes while taking some notes on the postulates and theorems.  We will use these ideas more and more as the year goes on.

We then got started on our homework assignment before leaving class.

Morning Thanks--Ray Carver

He came along in my life when I needed him, even though I didn't know I did. I wanted to write, but I knew little about it really. Some of my new friends, other grad students, told me that Ray Carver was coming to teach. They could barely contain themselves. "You don't know his work?" they said, as if I was born in a barn.

I hightailed it to the bookstore and bought a couple of volumes of his short stories. He never wrote a novel.

On first reading, I didn't know what to make of him, truth be told. His stories had this Bowie-knife sharpness that made me cringe, almost in fear, as if life could be cut us up into bloody pieces that never really went away. Reading a bunch of them together was like coming on a barrel of glass shards, full of unforgettable, yet alarming beauty. They were like nothing else I'd ever read.

That was 1980. Ray Carver was dry at the time, not the dead-and-gone drunk he was for so terribly long in his life. He was working on what most consider today his strongest stories, Cathedral, a collection that included the story "Cathedral," the story, he says somewhere, that changed his life, a story of hope that's in just about every anthology undergrads can buy these days.

He never attempted it, but he climbed Parnassus in the literary world, became a cult figure. Soon, there were thousands of Carvers doing what he did, or trying, writing something people began to call "dirty realism." Me too. Count me among the disciples. I could show you lean and mean stories I wrote back then, Hong Kong ripoffs. Ray Carver taught a generation of fiction writers how to be newly-minted Hemingways, sparse and tight and frightfully close to the bone.  

He liked me. And, if you're wondering, yes, there's some considerable idolatry in beneath that statement. Consider it a confession: Raymond Carver liked me, liked my writing. The only way I can explain how much that meant to me back then is to say that it means as much to me today as it did 35 years ago.

This morning's Writer's Almanac features a Carver poem from a moment in his life that every Carver-ite recognizes, the moment Ray Carver found out he was going to die from the cancer that wasn't going away.  Here's the poem.

What the Doctor Said

He said it doesn't look good

he said it looks bad in fact real bad

he said I counted thirty-two of them on one lung before

I quit counting them 

I said I'm glad I wouldn't want to know 

about any more being there than that

Don't ask me what a poem is--I don't know. To me, this feels more like prose than poetry, but frankly I don't care because it communicates with a place in my soul few things do. There's more.

he said are you a religious man do you kneel down

in forest groves and let yourself ask for help

when you come to a waterfall

mist blowing against your face and arms

do you stop and ask for understanding at those moments

To say Raymond Carver wasn't a religious man would be sinfully judgmental.  If "by your fruits you shall know them" is a rule of biblical thumb beyond nuance, some might say he wasn't. He left a trail of brutal ugliness, after all. But most of us are religious, in one way or another; some are just better at it than others. It's worth remembering this scripture too: not all who cry, "Lord, Lord. . ." are.

"Are you a religious man?" the doctor says. Carver replies with characteristic honesty.

I said not yet but I intend to start today

The doctor is a kind man. Listen to him, to what he tells a dying man.

he said I'm real sorry he said 

I wish I had some other kind of news to give you

I said Amen and he said something else

I didn't catch and not knowing what else to do

and not wanting him to have to repeat it

and me to have to fully digest it

I just looked at him

for a minute and he looked back

Ray Carver was not a big talker.  Trust me, he was not a stirring lecturer or a classroom stand-up comic. His ways were halting and sometimes even muffled. It was easy to miss some remarks. I never saw him drunk--who knows what he might have become?  And, of course, this silent moment in the doctor's office holds the recognition of eternity.

He knows it. Listen.

Something no one else on earth had ever given me

I may have even thanked him habit being so strong

The book that best documents what happened in Ray Carver's soul after this moment is a book of poems he titled A New Path to the Waterfall. 

There's just too much in that title and this morning's poem for me not to take heart. No one I know is God although some presume themselves approximates. I don't know the state of Ray Carver's soul. I have no idea of what may have happened on his death bed.

But to me, at least, this morning's poem is a blessed offering I'm greatly thankful to have opened. It's gorgeously arrayed with hope.

And hope, in this world, is something I need. 

I'm probably not alone.

Live to Ride

I wasn't really scared, but I was surprised when he rolled up beside me and stopped--this was years ago. The Harley was black as the ace of spades, his leathers uncreased, and the hooded helmet something Darth Vader might have envied. The guy was just, well, fearful, you know, that Harley rumbling between his legs as only Harleys do. 

When he pulled off the helmet, he was bald as a baby's butt, and older than I was. What's more, he was a friend. The whole thing was shocking because back then you didn't expect to know people like that, the type of biker who makes you roll  your eyes when they show up in ridiculously bad movies.

Shouldn't have been a shock, really. These days, McDonalds workers are trained to give everyone who shows up on a bike senior coffee without asking about age. Once upon a time a "bike" was a kid thing, a crotch rocket, one of the hot doggin' loose ends a kid had to tie up before getting serious about life, maybe his last acre of wild oats.

Now it's sometime the first batch, numero uno on a thousand bucket lists. 

On my way west on Saturday, I took some back roads and passed this marker on the Iowa side of the Big Sioux, where an old geezer's last mile on a Harley or Gold Wing came to a jarring halt. His good buddies and their wives put up this fond remembrance for the poor soul, who, the thing claims, lived for nothing greater than taking out that bike and pushing wonderful country wind through what hair he still had. Promethean, really--proud.

Well, okay, I thought. We should all be so blessed. Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, right?--even if it's a Hawg?  And besides, as the Pope now so famously said, "Who am I to judge?" This is the home of the free and the brave. If someone wants to go to his grave like Peter Fonda. . .hey! whatever makes your engine pop, right?

"Live to Ride, Ride to Live." Still, it's a credo that makes only if you're really bored, and that's a little sad.  And crosses too? WWJD?

I couldn't help but shake my head and chuckle a bit at the sheer lunacy of it, which isn't the sought-after emotion a sign like this is meant to trigger, or at least not what his buddies and his wife intended, I'm sure. I was probably supposed to give the deceased a few moments of silence in the sheer awe of his devotion.

Look, I had more than one motorcycle in my life, and I remember fondly taking off out west for years, mid-summer, and loving every moment of it. I'm serious. I was an old man, too, bald as a buzzard. I know the joy.

I suppose his wife came along too, and maybe they had a couple of really good hot years at Sturgis. I bet she even left her bra back home in the closet. You know.

More power to 'em. 

But still. "Ride to live, live to ride"?

Five miles away, no more, I rounded a turn and came up on this one, same rural South Dakota biker gang, I suppose, at least same old geezer ethic. Is someone actually building these crosses in his garage? Can you buy 'em on the internet?

This one is permanently affixed to its own story line. The old guy just missed a curve. It happens.

Am I wrong here, or would these roadside memorials pierce the heart more deeply if they were meant to honor 17-year-olds? The old bucks who died in both places, five minutes away from each other, had to be geezers, just had to be. Kids aren't old enough for credos. You got to be an old man to moralize. 

Just a couple of days ago, a small squad of odd-looking three-wheelers rolled up in front of me, 25 thou a pop, in case you're wondering and in the market, and that's without the togs. Only old guys can dream about these. Besides, what 19-year old kid is going to want a three-wheeler? 

But I'm thinking there's one heckuva market out there for three-wheelers, an ever-expanding market of boomers with round bellies and pockets stuffed with Cialis, in good shape to roll up to the Home. 

Seriously, a unit like this is just an old-fashioned walker on steroids. 

But maybe it'll save lives.

Ride to live. Live to ride. 

Whatever.

Morning Thanks--Sabbath on Spirit Mound

It's an aberration really, a odd little mole on flatland prairie, a strange little pile of glacial till, I guess, from which, bountifully, you can see for miles.

Spirit Mound get its name from the Yanktons, who insisted a whole tribe of devils lived on top that hill, little guys no bigger than a foot tall, who were regularly unkind to anyone who dared venture up where they were kings of the hill. The Yanktons told Lewis and Clark about these pint-sized menaces, so when the Corps of Discovery was here just about exactly 210 years ago, they left the river behind for an excursion and hiked a half-dozen miles north or so to check out the demons.

What they found was a great place from which to scope out the territory, which they did--and to their delight, they spotted buffalo, the American bison, probably in the hundreds or thousands, the first time they'd see them on their river trip west. But no little demons filling them with arrows. Nary a soul--not a one.

All of that happened not that far away from where we live, just across the river and tad south. Today Spirit Mound is a historical site and sweet place to hike on a sweet day like yesterday.  So we went. 

My father used to tell me that growing up in the preacher's house made him dislike every terminally-boring Sunday because there was so much the kids--and the preacher and his wife had ten--couldn't do. True story. 

Still, when I was a kid, if I'd play ball somewhere on Sunday afternoon, I'd have to sit for a half hour to stop sweating enough to dare walking into our house, lest it become sinfully clear that I'd been playing ball somewhere on Sunday. I'm sure Sundays were less straight-jacketed in our house than they were in my father's, but he was hardly an apostate.  

Somewhere in Stages of Faith, James Fowler claims that some of the spit and vinegar believers may have lived by and with during their earlier adulthood eventually dissipates. We get a little more, you know, "hey, whatever. . ."

I'm embarrassed to admit that our Sabbath on Spirit Mound yesterday might well have been something I wouldn't have undertaken years ago--after all, there was church at night. It's hard for me to believe that I would have been agin' such a hike up the mound, but I likely wouldn't have done it, on a Sunday afternoon because. . .well, I'm not sure why, maybe just because. 

And, of course, after church at night, I had to work, to get ready for school, correct a few papers, read a chunk of the Scarlet Letter maybe, figure out how I was going to navigate my Monday classes. It's more than mildly ironic, but I probably wouldn't have spent a Sabbath as I did yesterday because I had too much work to do.

Yesterday, the September air was dry and clean but still warm in a way that says summer is already a couple days' journey south. Harvest has yet to start so there was no dust to speak of, endless fields still enrobed in emerald. Seriously, there were no devils atop Spirit Mound, and you could see almost forever. No buffalo either, but with that much open space all around you could see how they might just be there, a couple of thousand maybe.

I'm a child of my parents' way of life. It's in me for as long as I live. If yesterday they were there seated on a couple of heavenly lawn chairs, watching us hike, I don't think they would have disapproved. They would have smiled.

After all, they're the ones who taught me sabbath.
