Algebra 10-12 assignment; May 27

After the long weekend, we got back to work reviewing for the EOC today by going over solving systems of equations.  We worked on both solving by graphing and solving by elimination between two variables.  The examples we did in class together then helped the students get started on their homework before the end of the period.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; April 30

After going over our entry task and homework, we took a look at how radical expressions are multiplied today in class.  The steps given were to  1.  multiply the numbers together outside the radicals    2.  multiply the numbers together inside the radicals    3.  simplify the numbers inside the radicals by factoring out perfect squares.

We did several examples together before getting a good start on the homework in class.

Assignment:  Multiplying radicals worksheet

What on earth do we do?

Madam Speaker, the Koran on the table before you is a handbook for terrorists. Blood drips from its pages. It calls for perpetual war against non-believers. That Koran before you is the hunting permit for millions of Muslims. A license to kill. That book is the Constitution of the Islamic State. What ISIS does is what Allah commands.
It's not all that difficult to determine how a politician like Geert Wilders attracts fervent disciples because it's not all that difficult to appreciate his rhetoric. Rid the world of Islam, after all, and the rest of us have a shot at real world peace. It's impossible to imagine what life would be like without jihadists.

Wilders is a Dutch politician who quite regularly lights hot fires. His office is in a far corner of the Dutch parliament, where it's easiest to protect him from death threats. He wears a bullet-proof vest his every waking hour, and is accompanied, wherever he goes, by a posse of body-guards. Muslim extremists would see him dead, many would like to kill him themselves.

Just a week ago or so, he laid out some steps he thought the Dutch government should take to rid itself of its growing community of Muslims.  "Recognize that Islam is the problem," he told the Parliament. "Start the de-Islamization of the Netherlands. Less Islam."

Famously, Wilders claims he doesn't hate Muslims, just Islam. "Close our borders to immigrants from Islamic countries," he told Parliament. "Do not prevent jihadists from leaving our country. Let them leave, with as many friends as possible. If it helps, I am even prepared to go to Schiphol [airport] to wave them goodbye. But let them never come back. Good riddance."

When hooded madmen take a knife to the throats of two American journalists and send the bloody video around the world, it's tempting to listen to Jeremiads by powerhouse extremists like Wilders. The body's natural reaction to poison, after all, is to all it can to get rid of it.

But barely a month ago I stood on the site of an internment camp outside of a Grenada, CO, a sprawling cemetery of perfectly aligned cement foundations that mark row after row of living quarters where once upon a time 10,000 Japanese, rounded up from throughout the American west, were forced to live--because they were Japanese.  That America could do such a thing seems preposturous--today. But back then, after the shock of Pearl Harbor, it's not difficult to understand how a nation could turn on those it determined closest to the evil that had murdered 2300 totally unsuspecting Americans on a sunny Sunday morning in December.

But mob violence isn't any less horrendous when it's practiced nation-wide.

Iowa was the only state in the nation to pass a language law in 1918, when war sentiment rose to fever pitch. For a time, it was illegal to use any language other than English in any public place throughout the state. Only in Iowa.

In some places throughout the state, the police were sent to monitor worship services to be sure that they were being conducted in the English language and not the language of what would have been the immigrant people the church served. Use of any other language was considered seditious and specifically forbidden.

The pastor of the Peoria Christian Reformed Church, Rev. J. J. Weersing, was arrested and left town at that time, because anti-German sentiment burned so hot in the hearts of non-Dutch locals. He feared for his life. He actually feared for his life. To some at least, the language those Hollanders used sounded just like the language of the rotten Huns.

On June 13, 1918, the Christian school in Peoria went up in flames lit by those who'd determined its constituents were traitors. Peoria wasn't the only place in the neighborhood torched by hate. In nearby New Sharon, the Reformed church went up in flames as well, and the pastor found unexploded dynamite beneath the parsonage.

Geert Wilders has gathered many a disciple with his rhetoric and his bold ideas, among them, in fact, a 32-year-old Norwegian named Anders Behring Breivik, who, on July 22, 2011, disguised as a policeman, gained entry to a youth camp on a Norwegian island and started shooting. When it was over 69 kids were dead, another 110 injured, 55 of those seriously.

Such things also should not be forgotten.

Geometry assignment; March 20

Our classes were very short today, so we spent the time to go over the homework answers and then remind the students of an algebra topic that they will need in this final section.  The topic involved factoring a quadratic equation and then solving for x.  We went over a few examples together before I gave them a short review assignment.

Memorial Day, 2014

He was, in a way, both a large part and a small part of the Allied Invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944--a small part because, that day, he was just one of Gen. Omar Bradley's First Army, 73,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands Allied troops to assault occupied Europe. In sheer scale of operation, his death that day was incidental, but the role he played was immense because he was one of thousands of GIs who knew that when they'd cast off from England's shore, some would not be coming back. They knew. They had to. The cost of freedom must have been written starkly on their faces that rainy morning.

They knew, but they went anyway. That's a huge role.

He was just one of thousands, but he was, nevertheless, a man with a story, just like each of them were. Family lore says he stepped off one of those landing crafts, the one to which he'd been assigned, and just like that took a Nazi bullet. I don't know that he'd served elsewhere in the war, don't know what his role was, or how long he'd been in the service--"PVT 112 ENGR," his stone says, and then, a line below, "COMBAT BN," all upper case.  Date of death: June 6, 1944.

Nor do I know what kind of horrifying impact his death had on the woman who would become my mother-in-law.  I can imagine, but I don't know.

Three years after he was killed, two years after the war ended, she put her life back together and married my father-in-law, another vet, a man whose mechanical skills had been put to good use in the motor pool, where he repaired tanks and jeeps and armored vehicles behind the Allied front on the long liberating trek to Berlin.

She married my father-in-law and life continued, as it does. The name Gerrit Ter Horst was rarely spoken.

Little flags wave in the prairie wind all over the Orange City cemetery today, Memorial Day, marking the graves of veterans galore. Some stones have summaries, but most list nothing at all, only a flat American Legion medal that describes what can already be inferred from the dates carved into the granite--"World War I," "World War II," "Vietnam."

The marker for Gerrit Ter Horst sits in a little covey of white stones, a couple of dozen other vets, including my father-in-law's brother, Charles Van Gelder, who never made it out of the States, a young man who, sometime during his military training, was a drowning victim before he ever shipped over and got near a battlefield.

I don't know how the Ter Horst family talks about their ancestor's death, or whether they do at all.  I hope so, because there has to be more to his story than a young woman, in tears, turning a diamond ring on her finger back home, here, in Orange City, Iowa, a woman who, years later, didn't talk about his death, never mentioned it to me at all. After all, some things simply have to be put to rest.

Last night, we discovered flowers on Uncle Charles' gravestone. Someone had remembered. Someone hadn't forgotten. It was a joy to find them there.

That there was no flowers on Gerrit Ter Horst's cemetery stone doesn't mean he's been forgotten. Last night we remembered that once upon a time, June 6, 1944, a man engaged to be married to a woman very precious to us was killed on a beach in Normandy. He left a sweetheart, and died a hero for all of us, family or not.

This morning's sky seems a perfect memorial--cloudy, a soft red band out stretching across half the horizon north, an almost heavenly red badge of courage. When I stepped out just now, a light rain was falling gently, as if the whole world outside my door, a world Charles and Gerrit must have missed terribly, was remembering, a whole world that hadn't forgotten.

Morning Thanks--Four men from Berwyn

The old Timothy Christian School

Late Sixties images should include a gallery of burning cities all over America, images most of us would rather forget. People died in violent street protests. People were killed. Shot. In the middle of the horror in Vietnam, National Guard troops were called up to police burning streets in Newark, Detroit, LA, cities all over America. The nation was torn asunder by racial hatred.

In Cicero, Illinois, a small, community-based Christian school, faced its own racial crisis when African-American parents from one of its supporting churches asked to have their children enrolled in what had been an all-white school in an all-white section of the city. The board agonized but finally refused, claiming that admitting the black children to what had been an all-white school would put the entire student body and the school itself into jeopardy--no, into danger that was very, very real.

Fifteen or so years before, a black family attempting to move into Cicero, came home to discover everything they owned stacked up in the street, a mob of 4000 having formed to make sure they understood African-American people were not welcome in Cicero. Animosity is too lean a word; hate is what motivated that mob, hate fueled by the fear the white and ethnic population of Cicero saw on a slippery slope: if there's one black family, next week there will be a half-dozen. A year from now there'll be a score.

Many of them had experienced similar neighborhood transitions, often difficult, often violent, in other Chicago communities. They didn't want black people in the neighborhood because they were sure that, soon enough, black people would be the neighborhood.

When the Timothy Christian School Board determined those black children would not be enrolled, they argued that those black children could not be enrolled because the fever of racial hatred--which is to say racism--in the neighborhood was so high that every last dear little child--white and black--would be in danger at the hands of the same mob who had piled that black family's belongings in the street outside their home. Warnings were given--shots would be fired, the school would be torched--bloody threats were made. The board decided they could not risk the torch of hate.

All of that happened almost fifty years ago, but I remember it because I was convinced, and I was not alone, that what happened at Timothy Christian School, Chicago, was the outing of inherent racism in my own ethnic and religious community.  I was a college student with decidedly liberal leanings at Dordt College, a very conservative place.  My father--a wonderful Christian man--considered Martin Luther King an "agitator" who couldn't be trusted because he'd frequented the company of known communists. King wanted war, not peace, my father would have said. Wherever King went, racial animosity didn't diminish, it grew, like a fire.

Timothy, to me, proved beyond a doubt that my people were racists.

Just a few weeks ago, at a restaurant in Berwyn, Illinois, I listened to four retired white men remember that era in their lives, four men who were part of the community that rejected those black children, four men who still attend Berwyn Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church, four men who were, back then, accused of the sin of racism by people like me because those men sided with the board's refusal to admit black children.

Two of them cried when they recounted those days. All four spoke passionately.  Even though almost a half century has passed, they look back on that crisis as horrifying in every detail. The tensions, the threats, the impossible decision, and the hate that decision created, all of that constituted a moment in their lives like few others.

I'll tell you what I expected to hear from them: I expected confession. I expected these retired men to say they were sorry for refusing admission to black children. I may have even expected tears wrung from heartfelt repentance.

There were tears, but I was wrong. Each one claimed that if he had to determine an answer to the request of those black parents again back then, if he had to relive all that hate, his answer would be the same because each of them was absolutely sure that horror would result, not from African-Americans, but from their own white neighbors. That's how much hate they witnessed and feared.

I listened to their stories, as did our whole committee, a committee composed almost totally of people of color. It's important to know that the white folks--me included--sitting around that table were a minority.

There we sat, a church committee, a denominational committee, whose most pressing concern is racial reconciliation, listening to four white men tearfully recount the horror they'll never forget in all its heart-rending detail, but sticking with a decision that made them look and sound, back then, just like their own racist neighbors.

It was a powerful and tearful moment, a precious moment I'll never, ever forget.

Back then, were they right?

I think not. But there's far more hesitation in my voice when I say that, fifty years later. Today, I know them. Today I understand them far better than I did when I was twenty because I've heard their memories and their life stories both before and after the Timothy crisis. I listened to their testimony of faith. I saw tears. I felt in all of those stories the very real humanity of those men, which is to say, by way of my faith, I felt the image of God right there in them as they sat and talked around that breakfast table.

The work of racial reconciliation is never easy, but it is blessed; and this morning, I am greatly thankful for those four men, for what they told us, for how they opened their hearts and filled ours.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; Jan. 28

We continued to work with solving systems of equations by substitution today.  We also took a quick check quiz at the end of the period.

assignment:  substitution worksheet #2

CDS

We used to say our Benny was teaching us how to get old. After all, he'd go down in a heap once in a while when trying to jump up on a table. Once upon a time we thought that was funny. He slept more often too, and lost his yen for kitty-ish terrorizing. He just plain had a whole lot less fun. He was just getting old.

But he was doing it with, well, cat-like dignity.

Then he started howling. He's 14 years old; that makes him significantly older than we are in cat years. Now neither of us has begun nightly howling for no good reason. We may have that to look forward to.

Then it abated, for no good reason either. But lately the werewolf thing is back, in spades and spells, three or four or five times a night for no apparent reason. His food bowl is full, he's got plenty of water, and he lives in a nice new home that's clean and cool in summer, warm in winter, a place to die for. He doesn't go out, so he's not troubled by coyotes or taunted by blackbirds. Humanly speaking, he's got no reason to howl.

But he does, often and loud. And apparently he's not alone. Old cats howl just like dead fish stink. And they do it, experts say, because they get senile and they don't like it at all.

Well, who would?  Here's the morning news: Benny's got felinish Alzheimer's. Maybe. He howls because he doesn't like feeling disoriented, experts say. His hearing may be going or gone. My wife says that sometimes she thinks he's going blind. Not that he runs into things or anything. Not yet. He's simply become the quintessential old grouch, I guess, and he's got good reasons.

And he does strange things. He'll come down here and walk around the room a half dozen times as if readying for a trumpet blow that'll bring down the place. Round and round he goes, like the army of the Israeelites. I sit in the middle and feel like the heathen awaiting judgment.

Cat vets call it Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). So if sometime you're over at our place and blue-collar Benny stars wailing away, we'll likely explain in a sorrowing tone of voice that he's suffering, sigh, from CDS.  Don't let it bother you. Just raise the volume on your voice a bit and put the howling out of mind. Take another glass of wine.

Truth is, poor old Benny, the misguided ancient, could well be subject to a encyclopedia of medical horrors.

There he goes now, in fact--hear him?

My father-in-law, who's 95, says that getting old is not for sissies. Bennie would agree, I'm sure. Dad's still got a wonderful, playful personality; but he doesn't walk well and his hearing up and left years ago already, like gone. You've got to yell almost to be heard.

Maybe Dad needs a roommate.

Morning Thanks--Preaching

What now seems forever ago, some editors asked if I'd be willing to try my hand at a book of devotionals for kids. My own kids were kids then, and it seemed like something I'd like to try. I wasn't a preacher, but these folks were serious.

Really, it was fun--a joy--and it paid well.

Now all of this was long before the internet, so whenever I really needed to know something, like for instance how much a sperm whale weighed, I'd yell upstairs and turn one of my kids into a research assistant, enlist them to run two blocks west to the library and look it up for a buck or two.

Technologically, we were in the Age of Stone Tools. It would take me about ten seconds to weigh a sperm whale today, and I wouldn't even have to let my fingers do the walking. I can simply ask the computer in front of me.  (Can you guess why some libraries are in trouble?)

I can only imagine how helpful the world wide web is to a preacher these days. With so much information so blessedly available, coming up with fresh ideas has to be easy pickins.

An article in Christian Century, "Plagiarism in the Pulpit," poses a very real question with a stiff opening line:  "Thou shalt not steal." Then, it lists a number of Christian notables in the U. S. of A., who were caught red-handed, fingers on the keys, real preaching superstars too. What's more, plagiarism is an equal opportunity employer; it's brought down Baptists and Anglicans, fundys and lefties.

But is lifting sermon material from sources other than your own mind and soul and passing it off as if it were your own really plagiarism?  As the article notes, the sheer abundance of information in this Information Age, takes the edge off our sense of sin.

Besides, we are, all of us, composite constructions of what we read and see and hear. I likely wouldn't be saying anything at all about pulpit phonies if I hadn't read it in a magazine.  And I didn't always do referencing either: when my son came back from the town library with the goods on sperm whales, I didn't credit World Book. Who needs to go to confession here--and why?

A very wise old preacher/editor I worked for once long ago, told me, long before the internet, that it really wasn't all that tough to be a good preacher because good preaching was just a matter of good reading. Okay, he was being a little cutesy, but I believed him then and I still do. He wasn't talking about baldly lifting other preachers' sermons and passing them off as your own; he was talking about reading in general--articles and books that, like sunshine, make a person grow.

It would be interesting to know how much plagiarism got past me as an English teacher for the last forty years. I'd honestly like to think not much, but I'm probably kidding myself. Some profs I knew were sticklers, seemed even to enjoy grilling students and hanging them thereafter. I was always too lenient--after all, I did it myself when I was in college.

Anyway, I trusted my editing geiger counter. After an entire semester or more, if I knew the kid, I knew what he or she could do, knew them in fact, by style. We all have our own, after all, like a fingerprint even. When a Hemingway handed in something written by a Faulkner, I could smell it. I'd call the kid in. Every time I did, I got a confession. Went through plenty of Kleenex, believe me.

When preachers deliver sermons that aren't theirs, trust seeps out of the stained glass and foul barnyard odors replace it.  That cheap kind of plagiarism is stealing.

But show me preachers who don't read or aren't shaped by what they do, and I'll show you whole churches full of losers, which we weren't last night, a fact for which, this morning, I'm thankful.

Course Description:

Algebra 10-12 is year-long entry-level math course that students can receive high school credit for.  The prerequisite for this course is that a student has already made an unsuccessful attempt to pass algebra 1.  The class covers Algebra standards set by the state and district.  At the end of the course, the students will be able to take an end of course (EOC) Algebra exam that can fulfill a graduation requirement for the Richland School District.

Course Overview:

ü  Introduction to Algebra / Review
ü  Integers and Rational Numbers
ü  Equations
ü  Inequalities
ü  Exponents and Polynomials
ü  Polynomials and Factoring
ü  Graphs and Linear Equations
ü  Systems of Equations
ü  Inequalities and Absolute Value
ü  Rational Expressions and Equations
ü  Radical Expressions and Equations
ü  Relations and Functions
ü  Quadratic Equations
ü  End of Course Review

Course Goals and Mastery Levels:
ü  Students will achieve mastery (80%) of the above concepts and pass the class.
ü  Students will achieve a passing score on the EOC exam.
ü  Students will be prepared to successfully go on into Geometry

Course Materials  (to bring to class every day)
ü  A notebook and paper, including graph paper  (3-ring binder with sectional dividers)
ü  Ruler, pencils, and erasers;
ü  If tests and quizzes are done in pen, however, there will be a 5% deduction.
ü  Calculator and textbook.

In-Class Expectations
ü  Eating and drinking is not allowed in class, unless the liquid is water.  I do allow gum in class, provided it is not seen or heard.
ü  Electronic device policy:  If I see it or hear it, I collect it and you get it back at the end of class.
ü  Phones are not to be used as calculators in this class.  If you need a calculator, you can borrow one.
ü  All tardies are recorded and handled by the office.  Be in your seat when the bell rings.
ü  Keep the language positive in your conversations with and about others.  No swearing please.
ü  The desks are clean.  Please keep them that way by not writing on them.
ü  Respect others by listening well and responding appropriately when they are done speaking.
ü  During partner work time, work and share the responsibility with who you are working.
ü  If you’ve got a question or comment, please raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged.
ü  Use your class time well.  Use the class-time that I give you to get started on your homework.

Be ready to work every day!  Math is a doing sport!  It is not a spectator sport!
Grade Calculation:

Tests: Tests are worth 50% of the grade.  There will be a test given at the end of each chapter and at the end of each semester.  The semester test will be worth the equivalent of two regular test scores.  Any student absent from class is expected to make-up the test upon returning.  It is the responsibility of the student to arrange a make-up time with the teacher.

Quizzes:  Quizzes are worth 20% of the grade.  Quizzes will be given on a regular basis throughout each chapter.  Any student absent on the day of the quiz is expected to make-up the quiz upon returning.  It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a make-up time with the teacher.

Homework:Homework is worth 30% of the grade.  You will grade your own paper in class before turning it in.  Papers turned in with no name will receive no credit for that day’s homework.

Late Policy:  Homework assignments turned in late will receive a 50% deduction.  Assignments turned in over a week late will not be accepted.  Late is after we collect the assignment at the beginning of class.

Grading Scale

93-100  à  A              83-86   à  B               73-76   à  C                           60-66  à  D

90-92    à  A-             80-82   à  B-              70-72   à  C-                            0-59  à  F
87-89    à  B+            77-79   à  C+             67-69   à  D+

Retesting Policy

A student can ask to retake one test per semester if they so desire.  The highest score that can be earned on a retest is 85%, and the grade on the retest is the one that will be recorded.  It is the student’s responsibility to ask for and arrange a time to retake the test with the teacher.

Absences
è If you are absent, you have that number of days plus one to make up your work.  If you are gone 1 day, you have 2 days to get the make-up work turned in.  If you are absent 5 days, you will have 6 days to get the make-up work turned in.
è Students are required to get work ahead of time for planned absences.  This includes all school activities and sports.  Failure to comply will result in a late assignment.
è If there are extenuating circumstances, please communicate these with me as they come up.

Online Communication

I post a blog on a regular basis of the ongoing assignments for this class.  It is listed under the geometry heading on the blog.  This information is also communicated in the classroom.

Free Ebook The Time of Our Lives: A Critical History of Temporality

The project of all philosophy may be to gain reconciliation with time, even if not every philosopher has dealt with time expressly. A confrontation with the passing of time and with human finitude runs through the history of philosophy as an ultimate concern. In this genealogy of the concept of temporality, David Hoy examines the emergence in a post-Kantian continental philosophy of a focus on the lived experience of...
