Sunday Morning Meds--"though he stumble"

“. . .though he stumble, he will not fall,
for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37

At the turn of the 20th century, what Willa Cather experienced as a child out on the Great Plains, surrounded as she was by a weave of ethnics, recent immigrants all, was something she never forgot and always celebrated.  My Antonia, a great pioneer novel, has given us one of the most powerful women characters in American literature, Antonia Shimerda, whose strength of character and purpose simply will not be defeated.

And hers was not an easy life.  When she was still a girl, her father, an educated musician in his native Bohemiaand someone clearly not fashioned for the hard work of opening the rugged prairie, takes his own life one cold night in his first winter as an American.  Because he was a suicide, the local cemeteries wouldn’t take him; the most unpardonable sin at the time, it seems, was the despair he suffered, the abandonment of hope itself, which is to say, the abandonment of faith.  Mr. Shimerda, who shot himself in the barn, was buried in the road.

Willa Cather frequently drew her stories from her own experiences, and if you’re ever blessed to visit Red Cloud, Nebraska, the place where she grew up, you can follow dusty roads through the bleak and unforgiving landscape she loved, roads which pass places where she dug out the roots for some of her stories.

Mr. Shimerda had a prototype on the land west of Red Cloud, and on one of those roads you can actually drive over the intersection where an anguished suicide, forbidden a place in the local cemeteries, was once buried, very much alone.  Driving through that intersection is an eerie feeling, even though the man’s remains have long since been moved.

Today, suicides are not refused burial in any local cemeteries that I know of, and, for that, all of us should be thankful.  I can not sympathize a whit with those who kept Mr. Shimerda’s body out of proper burial, but when I read a verse like this—from David—I can at least understand something of their fear, for fear is what it was, I’m sure.  To take one’s own life is to reject the eternal truth of what David says:  “though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

Even though, out here on the Plains, we have come a long way from Mr. Shimerda’s—and others’—horrific rejection, we still don’t know quite what to do with those among us who depart by taking their own lives.  We don’t know what to do with them, in part, because we do know—those of us who are believers—that the act of suicide defies the eternal hope of this line and so many others from the Word of God almighty.

Not long ago, it happened again, in a community not far away.  I didn’t know the man, never met him, but I know his family, several of the members, and I know of their profound grief.  Since it happened, no one has said much about it because, well, there’s not much to be said.  By all accounts, he was a believer.  And he suffered, suffered badly, within, for the past several years.  I know very little else.

What I do know—what I can believe because I know this much of the Almighty—is that he alone will judge the living and the dead.

And I trust Him.  I trust God and his promises.  I trust that he will do what he has always done and promises he will do forever—he will love.

Morning Thanks--Code Talkers

This marvelous story has more than its share of ironies.

One of the guys, in uniform, was arrested when an army unit picked him up and sent a message to his Marine commander that they'd captured a Japanese dressed in Marine garb and carrying Marine IDs. An Marine officer was sent over. The Japanese guy was no wolf in sheep's clothing; he was one of their own. He was Navajo, a Code Talker.

Or how about this? Code Talkers used their own Navajo language, a language spoken only on the Reservation, to save American lives. At the very same time at reservation boarding schools, the Navajo language was forbidden. Kids were fined or locked up in a kind of solitary if they used it, because wild injuns had to learn English and become good American citizens. At once, the Navajo language was glorified and demonized.

Then again, lots of the nearly 400 Navajo men who were recruited for the code talker program encountered stares when they teamed up with their Marine buddies because most white soldiers, the bilaganna, as Navajos would say, had no idea who they were. They'd never heard of a Navajo, had no sense of their history or character, and only the vaguest sense of how they'd lived. Even today the spell checker of Microsoft Word doesn't recognize the word hogan. The role the Code Talkers played in World War II was central to its victories, yet most of us didn't know them.

This week the Code Talkers got some significant air time because Chester Nez, the last of the original 29 Marine recruits, died peacefully in his sleep in Albuquerque. The last of the first is now gone, but their story should not be forgotten.

I never met this man, Wilsie Bitsie, but I did meet his family. They are immensely proud. As a boy, he was taught to play the piano by the wife of a missionary doctor in Gallup, New Mexico; as a man he went to war, serving with 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions at Midway and Guam and elsewhere.  He was a hero. He is a hero.

Maybe the most interesting irony is the the fact that Navajos participated at all. Today, there are no shortage of American flags standing in Navajo graveyards, or in any Native American cemetery. For a nation as ravaged by Anglos as they are, Native people have contributed immensely to American war efforts through the years. Grievances exist, after all. Injustice isn't just a chapter in tribal history, it is a major theme, oppression its central conflict. Still, when America called, they answered. And still do.

I'm proud that Rehoboth Christian School, Rehoboth, NM, has dedicated its middle school building to the Navajo Code Talkers, where their portraits line the walls. Even though very few of their white buddies knew anything about them, even though they were stupidly mistaken for the enemy, they're heroes.

Today is June 6, D-Day, a day of catastrophic loss on the beaches of Normandy, a day of honor, really, for all American World War II vets, including the Navajos, whose language carried batallions through endless South Pacific islands.

None of them should be forgotten. This morning's thanks is for them, what they did, what they gave to us all.

Ministrations

"The worst part of travelling is the toilets," my father would say as he wheeled off the tissue in two long, thin stripes, then shaped them neatly 'till they haloed the throne of some highway restroom, sat me down firmly, and waited. "Never can tell who sat here before."

He was, of course, quite right--just wasn't at all like home on those tall, hard stools with the gap in the seat. I knew even then that his blessed layer of paper kept me safe from gluttonous germs just waiting to feast on my innocent fanny.

Eighteen years later, when I'd become so much wiser than he, I simply refused to dress stools like my father, sure that his excessive tidyness was a course in bigotry designed to make clear that human beings had sinful behinds; it was that cursed total depravity rearing itself once again, keeping young Calvinists like me fearful of loving and trusting and being a brother.

Then, years later, a father myself, I'd wait for my son while his eyes scanned scribbles I was thrilled he couldn't read on chalky bathroom walls. When the task was over, he'd get off by himself, eyeing those oddly incredible drawings, and I'd peel off a tangled white stripe stuck to his pudgy behind.

Well, wouldn't you know? Turns out I was right when I was a mop-haired, late-sixties pseudo hippie, at least according Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who claims my dad's sweet fatherliness was quite unnecessary since whatever hungry germs he thought waiting for me on the lid were, in fact, incapable of finding a place on my toddler's behind.

I'm not making this up. And I'm talking to you, Dutch-America.

Those blessed paper liners one finds in well-tended public restrooms today exist only because of a toilet's inherent "ick" factor, or so he claims, because most of us--my family especially--are blessed with substantially secure and bountiful flesh on our bottoms.

Please. This isn't just my lame attempt at potty humor.

Turns out that your cutting board--that's right, that one in your very own kitchen--hosts a 200 times larger collection of fecal matter than that truck stop toilet seat. Schaffner claims the sink sponge you use for dishes is really heavy-laden, 200,000 times worse. Pardon my eeeeeuuuwww.

Here's the really bad news: whatever germs may be on that foreign seat, he says, are likely already aboard your keister. Think of it.  No don't.

Anyway, that's the news from an actual Professor of Preventative Medicine, at Vanderbilt, no less, the Harvard of the South. Look it up.

Well, I for one don't buy it, and pardon my skepticism. On this one, I'm solidly Republican. What the heck does science know anyway?

It's all a scam.  Listen! They're the ones who told us to stop eating butter.

Sunday Morning Meds--Inheritance

“For evil men will be cut off,
but those who hope in the LORD
will inherit the land.” Psalm 37

I don’t know that this line sounds right out here in farm country.

My father-in-law was what used to be called a “small farmer,” in the days when there was such a thing.  My wife grew up on a farm like Old McDonalds—little of this, little of that.

Well, I got news.  Out here, those kinds of farms simply don’t exist.  Farming has become agri-business, and everything has changed.

My father-in-law bought some land when he was farming, nowhere near enough for a young farmer today.  But he owns the land, enough of it that my wife’s inheritance is significant.  We could come heir to it, but then he might just give it away, to church or school.

But let’s say his land comes to us.  Let’s say we keep it, and even though we don’t live on it, we might just drive by once in a while.  We’d likely rent it out to the cousin who now farms it.  Eventually however, we’d likely pass land ownership on to our children.

Now there is a possibility that our children will live in the neighborhood someday, but that certainly isn’t a given.  So it’s possible that eventually the land her father bought as he slowly built his own farm will end up in the hands of absentee landlords.

That phenomenon is happening all over the rural Midwest, prompting people to ask whether so much “absentee landlordism” is going to be good for the health of communities.  That question goes to the very heart of the quality of life out here on the far western edge of the cornbelt.  What exactly is our future if people in faraway cities own the land we live on?

To promise, as the NIV does, that those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land sounds, in this region, like a pipe dream—and it is.  Good people don’t inevitably win in the quest for land ownership.  The mid-80s’ “farm crisis” made that perfectly clear.  More often than not, good, hard-working people got flattened.  Sorry, David—maybe that was true in old Israel, but it’s not true—nor should anyone promise it—in the rural areas of the Upper Midwest.

The KJV says, more metaphorically perhaps, that the righteous will inherit the earth.  In our present context, I much prefer earth to land.  If I lived in Toronto or New York or Los Angeles, I wouldn’t much care which word is used; but here, where the future of rural life is dependent upon land ownership, I much prefer “the earth.”

Earthspiritualizes richly.  It suggests that those who hope in God inherit the concept of earth; they inherit the true (which is to say, spiritual) riches of this earth, not the ground itself, not the back forty, the neighbor’s thousand acres.  Cold hard cash is not at issue here and neither is good black dirt.

Calvin says that what David means with this line is that those who hope in the Lord “shall live in such a manner as that the blessing of God shall follow them, even to the grave.”  That blessing may well include a thousand acres, but you can’t take that promise to the bank.

It probably goes without saying that what David is promising is a far site better than the flattest, blackest land in all of Sioux County, Iowa. But out here, where land ownership is so important, it probably needs to be said.

Eventually, my wife will inherit the land. More importantly, and by grace alone, she—and her husband and our children and all of those we love, those who hope in the Lord--will inherit the earth.

Attorney Jed LeBaron’s representation of a young black man accused of simple burglary leads him to the federal courts for a determination of whether a self-aware machine, a synthesis of genetic engineering and computer science, is entitled to the basic civil rights of a human being. LeBaron studied in Berkeley in the mid-Sixties and came away with a law degree. But what next? After returning from a lon...

An epic battle

For most of last week, it's been me and the weeds in a battle for the ages. I won't say I won, but right now I'm ahead by a half a yard, if you can trust my judgment (I'm hardly an objective observer).

The weather, thank goodness, was perfect. This week's temps promise oppressive summer heat. I don't know that 90-degree temps will change the outcome, but I can't help but worry. Advantage: weeds.

The landscaping crew convinced us that a brand new lawn would start better if they waited until fall. I was okay with that, but the decision left us with as fine a crop of weeds as you'll find in Siouxland, in Calvinist Siouxland, I might add, where weeds, glorious blossoming weeds, are as much a public sin as an illegitimately rounded female belly. Weeds like ours speak for themselves, and what they say is sloth---yes, Sloth of the Seven Deadlies.

Now the backyard soil is sandy and gravely, a blessing from our neighbor to the north, the river. The front yard is blessed with decent topsoil, so the enemy I'm facing is somewhat varied lot-wise, as has been my military strategy. We sprayed once, took most everything out. Agent Orange'll do that.

But when our garden started producing mutants, guilt raised its ugly head. To some of my friends, 24d is a curse word--I get that. Drifts can kill you and your neighbor.

Still, when panicked last week, when it looked as if the cause was lost, I sprayed again, not shock and awe, like the first round, but here and there some surgical strikes. I'm sorry, but it felt and looked as if I was in a strangle hold. I had no choice. I had to up the fire power.

But I prefer conventional arms like this guy, adept at both beheading the enemy and improving your golf swing. However, like its descendant, the gas-powered weed whacker, ye old scythe secures a temporary win since it leaves the roots and therefore multiplies enemy forces in something less than a fortnight. The yard looks almost righteous for a couple of days, but when sin returns it's legion.

Really, the most sure way to fight is hand-to-hand.  Jerk 'em, all of 'em, pull 'em up from the roots one at a time. When the ground is as sandy as ours is, that's not hard but it's really tedious. If, like me, you've already had one back surgery, it also means emptying the Aleve just to get out of the chair into bed at night.

But here's the glory--when I pull 'em, they're gone.

Look at these two shots:

BEFORE clean-and-jerk

And after.

Viola! See what I mean? That's why jerking 'em, roots and all, is the nuclear option.  And that's what I did.  Mostly.

Now multiply this square inch of God's creation by a whole acre, and you'll begin to understand the pitched battle I'm in. When I was a boy in the Cold War, wave after wave of Chinese soldiers kept me awake at night because a couple of kids in a pillbox just couldn't keep mowing them down. It's like that. I may have won the battle, but the war is far from over because somehow they just keep coming.

And this week, heat too yet.

Now all of this is of biblical proportions. Pulling weeds is God's work--well, Adam's anyway. It's all the fault of the fall, right? If we lived in Eden, there'd be button weed, no Aleve in the cupboard. It's that simple, right? Cleaning up weeds is our mutual calling.

But I've got friends--good friends, good Christian friends, good Christian friends who are scientists, in fact--who like to say that without a doubt humankind was deeply affected by Adam and Eve's dalliance with forbidden fruit, but nature wasn't, which is to say that weeds aren't somehow sin. I'm not making this up.

Listen, all week long I picked 'em and I've still got a yard full--all week long by scythe, by whacker, by Roundup. But mostly I pulled 'em, one at a frickin' time; and this mastadon-shaped pile, once yellowed, will soon be deliciously devoured in hellish flames.

So I don't want to know it's not sin I'm fighting here in my own square inch. Don't tell me I'm not subduing the earth. If that's in any way true, I don't want to know. The battle is too big, too epic, too biblical.

I won't hear it. I won't. It's blasphemy.

Morning Thanks--on his birthday

There was family here, somewhere out south of Ireton, somewhere around a town that barely exists anymore, a town with an odd, Irish name, a place called McNally. There was family here, and that's why his grandfather chose northwest Iowa as the place he'd take his own family when immigration became his dream. They left Gelderland, the Netherlands, and came to Iowa, a name and a place they must have found terribly hard to pronounce.

His father came with, was an immigrant too, but he himself was born here on the emerald eastern edge of the Great Plains so he has no old country memories. Which is not to say he grew up like some ordinary American kid. Dutch was spoken exclusively in the home, and it was, I'm sure, the language of the street in Orange City (named after "the House of," after all), where he and his father's family eventually worshiped when they moved four north and two east of town.

His education consisted of eight years of grade school; but then, in a family of ten kids, he the oldest boy, his traipsing off to school every day was simply not an option. After all, he'd already gotten his share of reading, writing, and arithmetic. I'm sure he didn't squawk. Leaving school after the eighth grade was a way of life out in the country back then. Besides, he loved to farm.

Still, if you ask him about regrets today, he'd say that he wished he'd have had more schooling because he thinks schooling would have made him smoother, more nimble in conversation, more conversant about things. He'd have been taught more about life.

Instead, he got his education elsewhere, when driving a team of horses, for instance. Once upon a time, he says, his own team went berserk, got wild on him, and took off through the ditches in an awful panic. He tried to hold them back but couldn't, and actually thought for a moment or two, bouncing over culverts, that he was going to die. When he told the story, I saw a level of fear in his eyes I'd never really seen before.

He remembers talking with friends about this perplexing idea that God has already chosen the righteous, that there's nothing we can do about it if we're among 'em, that maybe--just maybe--there's no such thing as free will. He says he remembers mulling that over beneath the stars when he was a kid, a teenager.  After all, it's what he'd been taught in catechism, what everyone around him believed.

In the early 1940s, he went to war with literally dozens of other catechumins from First CRC, Orange City, almost forty men from just one church in town. Soon enough, the army noticed this farm kid could fix just about anything, and they assigned him to mechanic school, where he learned how to bring sputtering tanks and jeeps and whatever else back to life.

He spent some time with thousands of other GIs in England in the spring of 1944; then, a couple weeks after D-Day, went over to Normandy just like so many others had before him. Their landing craft weren't shot at. Earlier waves of troops had taken out the Nazi shore batteries in the greatest sea invasion of all time. Thousands died right there in the water, on the sand beneath his feet.

He and his unit lugged their tools along and became part of the motor pool, basically followed the front from the shores of Normandy all the way to Berlin. It's almost impossible today to think of him, wrench in hand, working over a Sherman tank, but he likely did--there were 5000 of them over there after D-Day. The deep friendships that grew out of all that grunt work didn't die until his friends did. We took him to his last reunion when the ranks had already thinned deeply. I don't know that anyone but a veteran can describe what we saw when those old men were reunited.

While he was somewhere in France or Holland or Germany, his brother Charles, another GI, died in the Philippines.

His own motor pool unit was bound for the South Pacific once the Nazis threw in the towel, but Truman sent a couple of planes over Japan carrying cargo that changed the world, and that was that. Instead, he came home.

A couple years later, he married one of the prettiest girls in Orange City, a farm girl who'd moved to town when her father died, a tall, dark-haired beauty who'd been a Tulip Queen, a woman who had herself lost another soldier, a man killed right there on Omaha Beach.

The first year they were married, they lived out on a farm near the home place. They put in a crop, watched it grow green and strong, then one hot July day lost it all to hail. In order to get back on his feet, he went into town and worked at a garage for a couple of years. After all, the man had real skills with engines. He could fix anything.

Some years later, he went to the bank and took out a loan to buy some Iowa farm land of his own. It was a risky venture, five or six hundred an acre. His father, then retired, was pitching horseshoes in the Orange City park when one of the old geezers mentioned that he'd heard Randall had bought some land out there around the home place.

Fifteen minutes later, Grandpa was there on the yard shaking his head at his son, telling him he didn't know what he was doing. Today, he says, he wishes he'd have bought more at those prices.

He and his Tulip Queen had one child, a girl, just as pretty as her mom. That child is my wife.

I'm talking about my father-in-law, who today celebrates 95 years of life out here on the eastern emerald edge of the Great Plains, with just a few years absence during a stint in Europe that no one can take away from him.

He's a quiet man with sharp sense of humor and a capacity to love that's extraordinary. If, as some think, old men simply get cranky, then I got news: this one, my father-in-law, at 95 years old, is still really a kid.

And that's a blessing.

As is he.
